The title of my project is ‘Pas de Deux’, a terminology used in dance meaning to work/dance with a partner. Merging dance with fashion, I created an interactive garment that is showcased through a performance. My main inspiration for the project is Twister and Maypole dancing. I felt that Twister is a nice reference for my project as the Twister mat almost acts as the garment, the Players as the dancer and the Spinner as the audience. The garment is made using a weave technique, tying in this idea of Maypole dancing and Twister concept. Strips of Jersey material are woven in to make up the garment, with the addition of weaved textile pieces embellished though the garment. The colours I chose were the 4 main dot colours from Twister with the addition of white from the negative space on the Twister mat. The colours are woven in randomly, referring back to the unexpected element within the game. For the final performance I got my dancers to improvise, which works well in how Twister is an unpredictable game, and the outcome will be different each round. I wanted to communicate how a game of Twister runs, where in the beginning you are separated and as the game progresses, you start to tangle up , get into awkward positions as you go on and this idea of Maypole dancing gone wrong, reversing to be untangled. To push this project further I would like to incorporate more textile weaves within the garment and think about the performance aspect, to create a stronger finish.
