This project was a deep dive into the added benefits of using perforations in folded sheet metal, to attempt to highlight and utilise any specific findings uniquely and creatively. My research showed clearly that the use of perforations would not only drastically increase the accuracy that you could gain with little to no machinery, but in some cases, that you could achieve a near-perfect fold with just your bare hands. This ability to shape and form a solid metal structure from just one flat sheet became the basis of the rest of the project.

The brief I set for myself from here on out was to explore typologies that allowed me to showcase the benefits and beauty of these perforations. I felt particularly drawn to lighting, as it would allow me to create very compact designs that were full of details that would have been incredibly difficult to manufacture in any other way. Secondly, lighting worked harmoniously with the perforations as the small apertures allowed the slightest amount of light to pour out, making a beautiful detail from a functional feature.

A project stemming from a deep dive into the use of perforations in sheet metal to allow for precise and detailed folding by hand. The lighting outcome specifically utilised and highlights this technique as can be seen above.
