After our first visit to Chatham, I noticed that it was a calm place where more elderly people were seen than youngsters. I observed high street shopping, numerous pubs, and salons, which led me to consider what Chatham offers to the elderly. During our visit to the dockyard, I also noticed many elderly individuals. These observations inspired my final major project idea: creating a community space specifically tailored for the elderly, offering various activities such as weaving and knitting spaces, as many elderly enjoy crafting sweaters. To align with the concept of a circular economy, I plan to design an indoor garden using recycled materials, such as compost from food scraps or organic waste, to reduce landfill waste and establish a closed-loop system for nutrient recycling in the growing process. Additionally, I intend to collect rainwater for garden irrigation to conserve water resources. Art therapy sessions will be conducted to enhance mental health and well-being. Moreover, incorporating a daycare center within the community space will allow grandparents to bring their grandchildren along while they participate in activities. The community space will also include a café and bar. My design proposal will revolve around the theme of water, leveraging its soothing and healing properties to promote overall well-being within the space.
