My final piece is a short film focusing on the malleability of historical knowledge and information, when in the hands of organisations with socioeconomic and political interests. I unpicked my academic subject into a more easily understandable, less formal format; investigated archaeologies role in colonialism/colonial power and how this is reflected in the social structure of excavations; and researched archaeology’s link to ethnic identity and heritage. Initially, I thought archaeological knowledge to be based on rules of objectivity. While this is true for much of the research process, I observed many instances of archaeological knowledge being moulded or bent by the institutions presenting it in order to provide a warped picture – or narrative – of themselves. In other situations, language used to describe peoples/cultures were harmful and stereotypical, bordering on supremacist.
