A Rabbit’s Foot & Other Charms

Research project looking into luck and protection in British folklore and how objects represent these qualities. A collection of charms and amulets for luck, protection or curative purposes found in British folklore. Presented as an index and categorised to allow the user to refer to charms for specific purposes. The format is pocket sized so that it can be carried around making the index itself a lucky charm. In order to make the index as lucky as possible it sits inside a silk bag, which was a common way to carry certain charms. The glass beads are used to represent beads worn to bring luck and protect against colds and even the binding method is similar to an iron nail which can be used to enhance the luck of a horseshoe. The colours blue and black are also used for good fortune as they are significant colours in British folklore and considered to be lucky. The section at the back of the index contains perforated charms that can be torn out and carried if needed as well as further reading to find out more about charms and British folklore.
