The concept for this garment is to provoke a reaction of shock, realisation, empathy and identification in those who exploit the oceans or eat fish. I have done this by showing an innocent human in a state of discomfort similar to what marine life may experience when caught in ghost fishing gear. This identification with the suffering of marine life hopes to encourage a reduction in consumption and an improvement in the sustainability of fishing practices. Ghost gear is discarded or lost fishing equipment which remains in the sea and continues fishing for hundreds of years, catching many thousands of marine creatures needlessly and causing huge environmental damage and suffering.

The title of the project is ‘Innocence Imprisoned’ and aims to inspire change in the way we fish our seas and consume their inhabitants.

The photographs were taken by Fashion Photography student, Alex Fletcher from Arts University, Bournemouth.
