Love Watching in the Dark is a published dissertation that explores Japanese photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki’s seminal photography series, The Park (1971-79), examining its use of light in relation to Sartrean and Lacanian theories of the gaze, as well as John Berger’s Ways of Seeing (1972). Each chapter is arranged into 3 volumes, exploring the series through Guernico’s interpretation of the biblical story Susanna and the Elders (1617), Marcel Duchamp’s last major artwork Étant Donnés (1966), and Man Ray’s Le Terrain Vague (1932). The publication is housed in a plastic sleeve with a blind deboss and vinyl-cut sticker, inspired by the packaging and censorship techniques used for top-shelf magazines.
