Through an exploration of collage, embroidery and film, Luke Duncan has taken a journey learning to become more comfortable with his identity as a transgender individual. Playing around with and mocking stereotypes surrounding the trans community, this project focuses on the beauty that comes with gender exploration. Having kept quiet about his trans identity throughout the majority of his life, the development of this project has allowed Luke to become more open and accepting of himself within the world and led him to focus on the importance of hair when it comes to the presentation of one’s identity. To control the presentation of one’s hair is to have control of one’s body and mind. To choose and control how you are seen by the world. With hair and identity come growth, growing comfortable in one’s skin. Hair. Is. Everything.
