Passing Through is short film animated with ink and watercolour. It explores the contrasting themes of isolation and connectedness, inspired by a poem from Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1985 novel Always Coming Home. The story follows an unnamed character as she joins a group of dancers inside a burning house – a liminal space not entirely inside or outside the world.

In this animation I pushed myself to consider how colour can aid storytelling. I was specific about the choices and combinations I used, and had a lot of fun using a range of materials to paint the frames. I then scanned and edited them together digitally.
