Qingyu Liu’s (b.1997, China) work “Back to Purity” reflects a novel embodiment between the mask art of traditional Chinese “NUO” culture and the artist’s background. Masks are symbols, religious carriers, and shadows of her upbringing, becoming a bridge and a new space between her and traditional culture. She uses masks to reflect on the marginalization and scarcity of emotions in our world of “masked existence”, and invites the viewer to engage in a dialogue with the works.

Qingyu Liu specializes in the practice of fusing different materials into her paintings, resulting in a unique, rough and pure painting language that connects various themes. She creates artworks that help her find a balance and connection between contemporary art and traditional Chinese culture, and also between time, memory, and life in the present. Her works speak to the role of the self, others, and the world as personalities in contemporary society.
