The Ribbon Coffee Table is a project derived from the experimentation with wooden veneers and their properties. The projects aim was to create a piece that was both organic and yet strong. Playing with grain direction and different formed shapes allowed for the wooden veneers to be manipulated in a way that led to an outcome that is both simplistic and beautiful, and yet is strong and assertive. This allows for the table to have great strength while visually being light, emphasised by free flowing curves. The veneers aesthetic is based off that of a piece of ribbon, hence the name.

“Good design is as little design as possible. Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.” – Dieter Rams

This project aims to look at the manipulation of laminated wooden veneers to be able to create a form that has both an organic and free flowing aesthetic while maintaining strength.
