Over the last 9 weeks, I’ve been on a journey of unearthing material secrets, channelling ancient magic through manifestations, and investigating the relationship between the decorated and the dangerous.

I started my project with the intent of understanding the systematic undertones which exists within various societies, and understanding crafts role in the past amongst the development of civilisations – and finding appropriate places to investigate the role of historically significant objects – and what this can tell us about the present.  I’d also like to show how fantasy, imagination and world building, can help develop similar roles of importance as we used to assign to art objects.

One way I’ve looked into the significance of past objects is through apotropaic magic and symbols – understanding how the application of pattern and image can implicate the future  potential of an object. For example the Egyptian Birth Wand – inscribed with symbols and its purpose to protect mothers’ and babies’ safety during the labour process. To me this wand is an example of how when love and care is dedicated into the making and the use of an object, its true value is activated.
