Daughters of the Dust is an unbound publication contained within a box that explores a selection of moments from the film (Daughters of the Dust, 1991) by Julie Dash, highlighting the themes of migration, memory and community. This project provided the opportunity to decode and republish moments from this film within the publication format, celebrating Dash’s reimagined, lyrical portrayal of African Americans on screen.

 

Film Synopsis:

Set in 1902 on the coast of South Carolina, US, the film follows the Peazant family who have adopted the traditions and practices of their West African ancestors who were taken to the islands as slaves. The Peazant family are preparing to migrate to the mainland for a new life and gather together to commemorate the occasion.
