The Ambient Machine / AM – 208

In this increasingly digital world, I find we are given less and less control over the things we actually care about. The arbitrary swipes and scrolls of modern life offer no tactile response or feedback for your actions. Gone are the days of physically playing your favourite album, loading it in, and cranking the volume up. Sitting back and while the intro builds… you’ll be lucky to find 4 bars before the chorus today. I feel this separation from physical controls has disconnected us from truly experiencing music around us.

I wanted to create a chance for people to take a step back, to start from nothing and build the sound up around them. A chance to be mindful, and truly consider the impact of your interaction.

The Ambient Machine, is a simple tool. Not quite an instrument, but not quite jukebox, it is completely analogue and mostly unlabelled. It presents you an opportunity, are you interested in figuring it out? To learn each detail? Or are you satisfied by just having a mess around? Neither response is more invalid if you’re satisfied?

I aimed for this device to inspire creativity de signify the idea that making music is for musicians. You do not have to practice to get an immediate response, and I hope this may act as a stepping stone for people to approach music differently.
