As writer and director of my graduation film ‘Girly Pop’, I am proud to present our collaborative short film here.

‘Girly Pop’ follows two besties who are so not feeling the vibe of their boss’ lame cafe, so they bedazzle the hell out of the place, but it like totally ends in bloodshed.

This comedy teen film is inspired by 2000’s films like ‘Mean Girls’ (Waters, 2004) and ‘Bend it Like Beckham’ (Chadha, 2002). Taking inspiration from contemporary films like ‘Bottoms’ (Seligman, 2023), ‘Girly Pop’ is a blend of noughties nostalgia combined with the aesthetics of the present day.

The film explores themes such as sexism in the workplace, friendship, girls supporting girls and hope.

As someone who is part of the British South Asian diaspora, representing my culture has been an important aspect of my work. Writing and directing the character ‘Rana’ in ‘Girly Pop’ has allowed me to represent South Asian women who have been denied accurate representation in film.
